Week 5, A Contract with God and Blankets - 3 pts
I found this A Contract with God to be quite sad, dark, and twisted. The Comic chapters take you through several different characters who are greedy and as a result have bad misfortunes that occur. I feel as though the cover with the man walking up the stairs being soaked in the rain is an accurate portrayal of the stories hold inside. The first character lived a righteous life where he only does good, up until his daughter that once was a baby left at his front door step dies. When this happens, he angrily sells bonds that do not belong to him and turns his life away from God. A few years later, rich he demands the wisest elders rewrite a new contract for him to get the bonds back. They do so, but soon after he dies of a heart attack not being able to turn his life around. Much of the other stories are similar to this. There's a beggar man who doesn't take care of his family that sings for money in alley ways to get drunk. A woman hears him, and promises to make him rich, but he loses his way back to her never able to take her up on it. Another where a man and woman dress up fancy and go to a rich peoples hotel/town looking to get married to a rich person. They meet each other, but later when the man find out the woman isn't rich he rapes her and leaves her alone in the forest. Afterwards, a rich doctor takes care of the girl and marries her. The stories are messed up and pretty dark. I feel like to an extent the characters got more than they deserved. Blankets has a more bold and cartoony style with black bold lines cross hatching. It takes place with a boy and his brother going through their childhood, bullies, and school. I especially enjoy when Craig connects with Raina at the church camp. I definitely prefer this comic because the content isn't as harsh as the other.
