Week 1, The Arrivial - 3pts

The Arrival was a beautiful story. A man leaves his family to travel to another country to find work. Now an immigrant, the city he travels to is filled with foreign things whether the food, the buildings, the creatures that exist, or the language. Following the mans journey, we feel a similar distance and foreignness to the new society and encounters he has. Through his venture, we meet three separate characters, all in which underwent a trial and experienced being an outsider too at some point. The first in which, is an asian woman he meets on a flying boat. She is an escaped slave who stowed away on a train. The second, a boy and his father. Living in a city, giant monsters came sucking people up like vacuum cleaners. The boy, his mom and father pays a man passage way to escape the beasts, traveling into a new foreign city. The last he meets is an old man working next to him in a factory. The old man has missing leg. He recount his story, with scenes showing him as a young soldier going into battle, then a shot of him alone in a broken town on crutches with his lost leg. Each person he encounters has a tragic experience they went through, but they are happy and well now. I thought it was moving, the peoples stories, and how they were able to recount their past. They all encouraged the man in his journey to support his family, and bring them to him. Time passes as a flower blooms and wilts. The man is able to send money for his wife and daughter to be able to come to him, in which they happily reunite. The comic ends with a touching moment as the daughter helps a new traveler with directions.
